A Boy Catching Tadpoles
This painting was inspired by my grandson looking for tadpoles at the edge of a small lake. This composition reminded me of some of the paintings by the Impressionists which further suggested a similar treatment of this scene. I thought it gave the viewer an impressionistic snapshot in time of a young boy enjoying a moment of carefree curiosity and discovery. The location was Prospect Lake, Victoria, BC.

Shades of Summer
This painting is of a scene taken from Tower Park in Metchosin overlooking Witty's Beach. I wanted to capture the sunlight and the dappled shade on the reddish trunks of the Arbutus tree on a warm summer day.

Down River

With this painting from a scene on the Sooke River, I wanted to capture the beauty and magic of looking down river as the stream seems to disappear into mist and light around the bend. I wanted to share with the viewer the beauty a river's ever changing mood and how it touches our emotions.

Windswept Evergreens on Whiffin Spit

This painting was originally created as a plein aire one November day on Whiffin Spit. Since then I created this studio version of the same scene. I wanted to capture and share with the viewer, the raw changing features of a November day on the west coast. The weak sunlight from the south west contrasting with the dark clouds seems to add to the drama of the perpetually wind bent trees.

Autumn on the T'Sou-ke River
This painting was loosely based on an early fall afternoon scene on the Sooke River. The warm sunlight created a diffused glow in the background while in the foreground, the light and shadow created a beautiful pattern on the moving surface of the river.

Right Out of the Blue
This painting was inspired by a scene on the Hoover Dam. The distinct shapes along with the retro look of the intake towers rising out of Lake Mead provide a visual treat. The emphasis of contrasting color, shadow and light enhance the overall atmosphere of the cool water under the hot desert sun. This is an oil painting on a 12" by 24" stretched canvas. Evening Flood Tide

This painting was based on a late summer evening scene, near the mouth of the Oyster River on the east coast of Vancouver Island, with the tide starting to flood. The color in the eastern sky was from the setting sun in the west, behind and to the left of myself.

Serenity - Point No Point

This painting is based on a scene near Point No Point on the Southwestern coast of Vancouver Island. This region of Canada sometimes presents a moody surreal atmosphere under overcast skies with large green rolling waves presenting beautiful contrast against the muted tones. I wanted to capture and emphasis the serene beauty and power of these thundering waves on a large horizontal canvas.

Summer Fog

This painting was inspired by a beach scene near the Sooke Harbour House on Whiffin Spit. Occasionally on a summer day, a soft fog will roll in from the Strait of Juan de Fuca, giving rise to an unusual yet beautiful scene. On the one hand, the open sea with the fog creates a cool mysterious mood, while at the same time, the sun shining down on the garden and trees creates a warm and inviting setting.

Thin Ice on Cooper's Cove

This painting was inspired by an early morning winter visit to Cooper's Cove. I was able to capture this peaceful scene, along with the thin layers of ice floating on the mirror like surface of the water, while in the distance hung a soft morning mist. I thought this composition worked well with a vertical style canvas.

Late Summer on Glinz Lake

This painting was inspired by our annual fishing trip to Glinz Lake this past September. The late summer sun slanting down on the surrounding forest, along with the hints of fall in the thick clouds over the distant hills and the changing color of a solitary bush along the lake edge inspired me to try and capture this tranquil moment.
