Just a Kiss Away

This oil painting was inspired by an intimate scene of two overlapping islets (Haystack Islets) located just off shore of Tower Point Park in Metchosin British Columbia.  I abstracted this scene to try and capture the interesting shapes and to project a mood of serenity under a lowering sky.

Tranquility

Under a Full Moon at Dusk

This painting is was loosely based on a large old growth stump that had washed up near Yellow Point on Vancouver Island.

Winter Storm

This latest painting, entitled "Winter Storm" was inspired by the recent stormy January weather as viewed from Whiffin Spit in Sooke on Vancouver Island.

Woodland Stream

This painting is loosely based and inspired by a woodland scene with a small stream running down through the trees near the Sooke River on Vancouver Island.  It received an Honorable Mention Award at the Federation of Canadian Artists Fall show in Victoria BC, 2019.  It is a 12" x 36" oil painting on wrapped canvas. Winter Light

This small painting was inspired by a winter scene near the mouth of Ayum Creek overlooking an old saw mill site in the distance. In the foreground is an old log pond.

From Russia with Love

This new oil painting is of a rural Russian scene inspired and loosely based on a lovely photo shared by Irina Dubrovskaja, an accomplished musician and artist from Russia. I felt this composition had a beautiful classical feel to it and I wanted to try and capture the pure essence of this lovely moment.

Break in the Weather

This painting is inspired by a scene during a visit to Yellow Point.  The rain suddenly lifted, the clouds started to break up and the sunlight poured down on this tranquil seashore scene.

This painting was inspired by a photograph taken by Irish artist Janey Meyler. The scene is from the Burrow at Rosslare towards the town of Wexford.

High and Dry, Yellow Point

This painting was inspired by a scene of an old weathered stump washed up and stranded on an outcropping of sandstone at Yellow Point.  The overcast day added a sense of drama contrasted with the lighter skies in the distance.  This painting received Honorable Mention in the Federation of Canadian Artists, Victoria 2016 Fall Show.

This painting was inspired by a scene near the Southern tip of Vancouver Island from Tower Pt Park in Metchosin looking south across the Salish Sea towards the Olympic Mountain range.

Lenticular Dreams over Sooke Hills

This surrealistic style painting was inspired by a scene looking towards Sooke with the unusal and seldom seen lenticular clouds floating over the Sooke Hills.  This work was dedicated to the memory of my dear artist friend and mentor Bill Skuce who passed away in Feb 2015.
For this painting, I was honored to receive the People's Choice Award for the Sooke Fine Art Show of 2016.

After the Storm

This is a scene from Whiffin Spit after an overnight storm, with the morning light reflecting the beauty of the incoming swells, wet rocks and storm tossed sea grass.

Springtime at Yellow Point

This painting was inspired by our annual trip to Yellow Point last spring.   The gold green moss covering the rock outcroppings along the shoreline added a beautiful touch of color to this overcast spring scene.  This painting was awarded 3rd prize in the 75th Anniversary Exhibition of the Federation of Canadian Artists in Victoria BC.

Autumn Mist, Sooke River

This autumn scene was inspired by the late afternoon sun casting a shadow on the Sooke River creating a beautiful back drop to the interesting shapes of the overhanging bare branches.

Mill Pond Reflections

This painting was inspired by a scene near an old Mill Pond used to contain logs for milling. This pond is near the mouth of Ayum Creek outside the town of Sooke.   The still reflections of the dark forest, gold and green grasses along with the old wood structures served as a perfect composition.

Waterfall in the Forest

This painting was inspired by a scene on Todd Creek located within a Vancouver Island rain forest. This waterfall only runs full during the rainy season where it then flows into the Sooke River.

A Walk through the Woods, Yellow Point

Lone Tree

This oil painting was inspired on a trip to Whiffin Spit where a lone tree near the end of the Spit stood out against the soft fog in the background and the dried grasses and scattered logs in the foreground.

Snowfall on Stone Ridge

Shelter from the Storm

This painting was inspired by a plein aire session on a windy November day on Whiffin Spit near Sooke British Columbia. The driftwood structure in the painting is a temporary structure built by beach visitors.  I thought the subject lent itself perfectly to the mood of the November light and the west coast storm.

Sunset Glow

This painting was inspired by the glow of the setting sun reflecting softly on the landscape while the shadows along the rocks held a cool bluish tone.  This scene is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island at a location called Point No Point.

Running Low

This painting was inspired by an early October plein aire outing to the Sooke River near a place called Sand Pebble.  The river was running unusually low after a long dry summer.  The light  colored exposed rocks added an interesting aspect to this view of the river.

This painting of a big cloud rising towards the East over the greater Sooke area was inspired during a walk late one afternoon on Whiffin Spit.

Mill Pond Shoreline

This painting was initiated as a plein aire painting one sunny spring day near an old mill pond next to the mouth of Ayum Creek.  The old wood structure sticking out of the mud at the edge of the pond provided an interesting focal point for this composition.  The various shades of spring time green and warm colors added a certain beauty to this scene.
